XMM - Newton observation of the eclipsing binary Algol

چکیده
We present an XMM-Newton observation of the eclipsing binary Algol which contains an X-ray dark B8V primary and an X-ray bright K2IV secondary. The observation covered the optical secondary eclipse and captured an X-ray flare that was eclipsed by the B star. The EPIC and RGS spectra of Algol in its quiescent state are described by a two-temperature plasma model. The cool component has a temperature around 6.4×10 6 K while that of the hot component ranges from 2 to 4.0×10 7 K. Coronal abundances of C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Si and Fe were obtained for each component for both the quiescent and the flare phases, with generally upper limits for S and Ar, and C, N, and O for the hot component. F-tests show that the abundances need not to be different between the cool and the hot component and between the quiescent and the flare phase with the exception of Fe. Whereas the Fe abundance of the cool component remains constant at ∼0.14, the hot component shows an Fe abundance of ∼0.28, which increases to ∼0.44 during the flare. This increase is expected from the chromospheric evaporation model. The absorbing column density N H of the quiescent emission is 2.5×10 20 cm −2 , while that of the flare-only emission is lower than 1.3×10 20 cm −2. Together with previous observations, this N H difference suggests that there exists a belt of cool gas above the corona and the belt runs parallel to the equator of the K star.

A spatially resolved limb flare on Algol B observed with XMM - Newton
We report XMM-Newton observations of the eclipsing binary Algol A (B8V) and B (K2III). The XMM-Newton data cover the phase interval 0.35 – 0.58, i.e., specifically the time of optical secondary minimum, when the X-ray dark B-type star occults a major fraction of the X-ray bright K-type star. During the eclipse a flare was observed with complete light curve coverage. The decay part of the flare ...
متن کاملRX J 004717 . 4 - 251811 : The first eclipsing X - ray binary outside the Local Group ?
The X-ray source RX J004717.4-251811 in the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253 was found to undergo changes from a low to a high state twice, during an XMM-Newton EPIC observation in December 2000 and also during a Chandra observation one year earlier. These transitions are interpreted as egresses from eclipses of a compact object in a high mass X-ray binary system (HMXB). The phase of eclipse egr...
متن کاملBepposax Observation of the Eclipsing Dipping X-ray Binary X 1658-298
Results of a 2000 August 12–13 BeppoSAX observation of the 7.1 hr eclipsing, dipping, bursting, transient, low-mass X-ray binary (LMXRB) X1658-298 are presented. The spectrum outside of eclipses, dips and bursts can be modeled by the combination of a soft diskblackbody and a harder Comptonized component with a small amount (1.3 × 10 atom cm) of low-energy absorption. In contrast, an RXTE observ...
متن کاملPeriod change and δ Scuti pulsations of eclipsing binary star RZ Cassiopiae
RZ Cas is an Algol-type partial eclipsing binary, the secondary component of which has filled its Roche lobe. Its visual magnitude is 6.18 and its period is 1.195 days. The most important characteristics of RZ Cas are period change (due to mass transfer) and anomalies in the primary minimum of its light curve (due to δ Scuti pulsations). In this paper, light curves of RZ Cas are obtained using ...
متن کاملThe eclipsing bursting X-ray binary EXO 0748−676 revisited by XMM-Newton
The bright eclipsing and bursting low-mass X-ray binary EXO0748−676 has been observed at several occasions by XMM-Newton during the initial calibration and performance verification (CAL/PV) phase. We present here the results obtained from observations with the EPIC cameras. Apart from several type-I X-ray bursts, the source shows a high degree of variability with the presence of soft flares. Th...
